原作の"A Thousand Winds"は、9.11同時多発テロで父親を亡くした少女が一周忌で読み上げたり、IRAのテロで亡くなった青年が遺した手紙に書かれていたり、マリリン・モンローの二十五周忌で朗読されたりなど、アメリカでは超有名な詩らしい。
生の儚さや無常などをうたった詩は多いけど、この詩のように「死者の立場で」うたわれたものは、少なくとも今までに目にした記憶はない。深遠で、そしてそれでいてなぜか明るくさえある。
この本は作詞・作曲家であり写真家でもある新井満が、この詩の日本語訳を何枚かの写真に乗せてみたり、メロディに乗せてみたりといったことを試みている。歌のほうは実際に聴いてみないとわからないけど、とりあえず写真がとても綺麗だった。それだけでも持っている価値がある1冊だと思う。今回は残念ながら手放すことになったけど。
